As business managers, our job is not to manage people. Art believes it’s not enough for people to do their job “properly,” but rather empower them to do their job exceptionally well.

He always got the best results when every person on the team assumed leadership in their area of responsibility, ensuring they had all the resources needed to get the job done to its highest level and to the best of their ability.

When working at the SITIX Sumitomo silicon manufacturing plant, he first told his team, “You are the professionals here; I shouldn’t have to tell you what to do or how to do it. You are already trained for this. I need you to tell me what you need from me so you can do your job to the highest standard, be most efficient possible and get home safe.”

The results were phenomenal because a large part of what the team needed was communication-based, and by improving internal flows, we achieved results around force multiplying principles.

Force Multipliers Make You More Money

In 2008, Art lost over 50% of his business from one day to the next and was faced with laying off a significant number of his highly trained and experienced engineers and designers.

This perspective was painful since it took him years to assemble the right team. The loss of business was also putting his company’s future in jeopardy.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and he needed to think fast to find solutions. Then it struck him. As the director of business development of my own business, creating and leveraging connections seemed the logical solution and the way forward.

He reached out to his competitors in the same predicament and proposed collaborating to retain their workforces. The proposal consisted of “leasing” members of each other’s workforce as extra business arose. These short-term contracts would prohibit either company from fully onboarding new hires due either the lack of schedule, skillsets, or expertise required. Each person leased was able to retain their current employment and benefits. Each business kept its valued employees and split the profits after costs… win-win.

His proposal fell on friendly ears and was soon put to good use on a large Orion Crew Vehicle project that was seriously behind schedule. They went on to deliver the project three months ahead of schedule.

Art subsequently replicated this model numerous times and decoded and quantified it into a method that he now uses with his clients.
